"Breath, Eyes, Memory"

We read “Breath, Eyes, Memory” back in 1998 when Oprah picked it for her book club, and we’re thinking it’s time to re-read this harrowing story of Sophie Caco, a young Haitian girl who is forced to leave her home to live in New York with a mother whom she barely remembers.
Although we don’t remember a lot of the story’s details, we can still feel the power of author Edwidge Danticat’s language and the culture she so vividly brings to life. She introduced us to a people who have been through unspeakable suffering yet remain proud and strong and determined to overcome their circumstances.
This is an important book to read now when the people of Haiti are once again challenged by tragedy. It shows the world that if we just help provide the resources for them to start rebuilding, they have the resilience and tenacity to come back stronger than ever.
