Matters That Matter: Making Over “Makeovers”
When we hear the word “makeover,” most of us think of improving our physical appearance, as well as making adjustments to our psychological, spiritual, and professional selves. The implication is that who we are, as we are, is not enough. We are in need of improvement, often extreme improvement. We only need thumb through the glossy, Photoshopped pages of almost any magazine, surf the web, flip the TV channels or listen to the radio to be reminded of our imperfections. The more we compare, the less we measure up.
We are ready to declare, “Enough already!” Rather than make ourselves over, it is time to make over the notion that we should be anything other than ourselves. The truth is that we are all flawed. And the truth is that we are all perfect. Perfectly imperfect human beings, every one of us.
Imagine what might happen if we quit trying to measure up. No one is forcing us to buy into this idea, but it is a seductive call, and one that is hard to resist. Someone has to break the cycle and, as the visionary women behind StyleSubstanceSoul believe, women have the power to change the world. We couldn’t agree more, and we believe that this is an idea that needs changing. Not only for ourselves, but for those who follow after us. The young women following in our footsteps – daughters, sisters, employees or the young women serving up our lattes – are watching. The only way we can begin to break the cycle of comparison is to stop comparing. And get on with the sacred calling to know, understand and love ourselves. When we do that, when we show up for life as our own unique and irreplaceable selves, we each add to the world something no one else can.
By being ourselves we might just make over something greater: How about the world!
P.S. What matters to you?

What matters to me? It matters to me that our girls are not being made aware of the past path forged by women to get where we are and where we still need to go in our male dominated world. It seems they, generally, take the vote, for instance, for granted and don’t even exercise this priviledge. Our schools do not teach or emphasize our female history. Even girl scouts has whitewashed the relevance of our forbearing women. Do we really need a go to the mall patch? I love your website and encourage your viewers responses on how they are getting the message out to the girls around them.
What Matters to me? Integrity, Enthusiasm, Committment, Community and Leadership. I try to do what I say I will, have a great attitude while doing it, find inspiration from the actions of others, have a committment that the folks involved are somehow inspired and strive to lead by compassion and example. I often stumble, sometimes fall hard. However, the support around me is uplifting…rock on women of the world!!!
the matters that matter to me? truth! where there is truth there is growth; forgiveness, courage, insight, generosity and grace. The Truth, a simple, yet often avoided at all costs, innate ability. Tell the truth, Tell the truth, Tell the truth…especially to yourself
women of Style, Substance and Soul… love your thoughts and hearing what matters to you! We all have such important work to do – and as we all know – our work is ours alone. If we don’t do it…. it won’t get done. What part of the world is within your grasp today? Who can you inspire? How can you love yourself – and honor your own unique and unmatchable soul? Every time we show up as ourselves, and live according to the matters that mater to us – we make it a bit more possible for those around us to do the same! Keep on keeping on!!
