BlogHerWe were so excited that BlogHer was being held in San Diego this year that we signed up for the two-day conference as soon as registration opened. Although Amy, Susan and I decided to divide and conquer so we could attend as many workshops and meet as many vendors, sponsors and fellow bloggers as possible, we all wanted to go to the special pre-conference Pathfinder Day session, My Blog as Media Company, led by two of our top role models: Kathryn Finney,The Budget Fashionista, and Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman.

What a privilege it was to spend the day with these two inspiring women. What makes them so special, you ask? We’ll tell you about Ree next week but meanwhile, here are 10 things we love about Kathryn Finney:

Kathryn Finney1. She is warm, open and unpretentious, and is happy to share her extensive knowledge. Talking to her is like hanging out with a friend – a very smart friend. She genuinely wants to see all women succeed, as evidenced by the generosity she shows to other bloggers on The Budget Fashionista site. We hope she’ll find StyleSubstanceSoul worthy of some “link love,” too!

2. She is passionate about her subject matter. One of the first women to start a fashion blog, she began writing back in 2003 when her life was at a low point. Since she loved clothes and shopping, her techie husband suggested she blog about it. The Budget Fashionista is now, deservedly, one of the most successful and well-respected fashion sites on the Web.

3. With her tagline, “Frugal is the new black,” she made budget shopping cool.

4. She founded the Robert Finney Technology Fund, which provides scholarships for African-American high school and college students pursuing careers in technology, in honor of her father.

Kathryn Finney5. Her bestselling book, How To Be A Budget Fashionista: The Ultimate Guide to Looking Fabulous for Less, is full of so many great tips, it’s a bargain in itself.

6. She never sacrifices style or quality in her quest for a bargain.

7. She knows the importance of a good undergarment.

8. She thought our content would be a perfect match for O magazine online, and suggested we approach them about partnering. Love you, Kathryn!

9. The woman has crawled across the floor of Marshall’s in search of treasure.

10. She looks like a million bucks, even though her outfits cost many zeroes less.
