Speak Out: A Poem About Domestic Violence by Miriam Mendoza, Age 11

In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are so proud to post this poem by 11-year-old Girl Scout Miriam Mendoza, whose 19-year-old cousin was murdered last year by her estranged husband, and who is the inspiration behind our M-Power U with StyleSubstanceSoul.com initiative.

Speak Out

Just when you thought

You found the right person to love

He starts hitting you he gets jealous

When you talk with another boy he

Screams and hits you but all you do is keep it in silence

You’re trapped in your own jail you live in a black world but…

You’re scared to speak you’re afraid he will hit you and kill

You, there’s no way to get out of the world at least you

SPEAK OUT!!!!!

    Wow.
It’s sad to think a little girl could experience such sorrow.
Hopefully, the good that will come out of this tragedy is that she will never let the same thing happen to her.
I see a strong woman in the making.
    You go, Miriam!

I just saw an amazing documentary last night called Crime after Crime about the very courageous battle by Debra Peagler, an incarcerated survivor or brutal domestic violence. and her legal team to free her from prison. This documentary is being shown at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla this Thursday night as a fundraiser, and on Oprah’s OWN next Thursday November 3rd at 9pm. It is a must see.

  4. LAURA G says:

Only massive effort with shown support and outreach will and shall make a difference. This girl’s step is the courage speaking.
Thank you for making this your mission, my dear Women.
    With love to you,
    Laura
