What is bark NZ?
BARK NZ is a registered charity dedicated to supporting our communities by providing education to children on how to be safe around, and have positive experiences with, dogs.

Mulches are like blankets covering exposed soil using natural materials like hay, straw, clippings, wood chips, and newspapers to protect soil structure, stabilise soil temperature, and prevent erosion or runoff. As mulch breaks down, it feeds the soil with essential nutrients.
How good is bark mulch?
When used as a surface mulch, bark has no effect whatsoever on the soil’s nutrients – it does not directly supply nutrients, nor does it deplete the soil of nutrients. When used as a soil conditioner, or in tree planting, however, bark will reduce the amount of nutrients available to plants.

What is the difference between mulch and bark?
Bark nuggets last longer than shredded wood mulch, but are not ideal for areas prone to flooding or heavy rains, as the bark chunks can float away. Bark pieces retain moisture while blocking sunlight from reaching tiny weed shoots trying to sprout in spring and throughout the growing season.
What type of bark mulch is best?
Shredded bark is one of the best mulch types to use on slopes and it breaks down relatively slowly. Some shredded bark mulches are byproducts from other industries and are considered environmentally friendly.
How long do bark chippings last?
seven to ten years
You can expect it to last for seven to ten years if you maintain it properly. The bark mulch should have constant contact with the soil underneath and receive water regularly. This will keep the bark shredding relatively healthy and slow down the degradation.
