What is Cisco Nexus fabric extender?
Table of Contents
A Fabric Extender (FEX for short) is a companion to a Nexus 5000 or Nexus 7000 switch. The FEX, unlike a traditional switch, has no capability to store a forwarding table or run any control plane protocols. It relies on its parent 5000/7000 to perform those functions.
How do I configure Fex?
How to Set Up Cisco Nexus Fabric Extender
- Rack the FEX. The official Cisco documentation demonstrates racking a FEX in a four-post rack, using the supplied rack ears and rail slides.
- Install & cable the uplinks.
- Configure a virtual port-channel and add physical interfaces.
- Apply the code below to both 5Ks.
Does ACI support Fex?
What are the FEX limitations along with Cisco ACI? FEX can only be connected to Cisco ACI with what is known as “straight-through” topology as shown below. The Dual-homed Active-Active FEX design as below is NOT supported with Cisco ACI.

What is Cisco Nexus 2000 Fabric Extender (Fex)?
In a data center that has deployed Cisco Nexus 5000 or 7000 switches, Cisco Nexus 2000 series fabric extenders (FEX) are commonly used for top of rack (ToR) connectivity. FEX units are priced attractively, as they serve a limited purpose and are not feature-rich switches.
