Why am I getting snipe on my jointer?
Table of Contents
Jointer snipe occurs when the outfeed table is positioned below the jointer knives. In most jointers the height of the outfeed table is adjustable, and that makes the fix to jointer snipe a relatively easy one. Ensure that the knives are set properly.
What happens if the outfeed table of a jointer is too low?
An outfeed table that is too low can lead to a different kind of problem — snipe. In this case, the jointer will work just fine through most of the cut.

What causes end snipe on a jointer?
Snipe on a jointer is caused by the outfeed table being set too low or too high relative to the cutter head. Snipe on both ends does not sound like a jointer to me. Snipe on a planer is caused by a multitude of scenarios dictated by which machine you have.
How do you get rid of jointer snipe?

- Ensure that the knives are set properly. Check carefully with a good straight edge, and be sure that the knives are set in parallel with the table.
- Sneak up on the adjustment.
- Run several tests, then lock it in tight.
How do you reduce snipe in a jointer?
How do you check the jointer bed for flatness?
I use a 40″ Lee Valley straight edge and a set of automotive feeler gauges to check jointer beds for flatness. I remove the cutterhead guard, move the fence to the rear position and roll the cutterhead to a position where no knives poke out and raise the infeed table.
How do you check for flatness of a table?
I lay the straight edge across the infeed and outfeed tables checking, front, center, back and both diagonals for flatness. You may have to raise/lower the tables to get them both in the same plane. Try to slip a .007″ feeler gauge under the end of the straight edge as a go/nogo gauge.
Should joiners be flat or flat?
All jointers have the tables installed, and then they are surface ground or milled in place, they should be flat. But due to the price driven offshore manufacturing, by the time you get your jointer, like wood, cast iron moves.
When grinding a jointer do you Mount the table to?
When grinding a jointer, it may be necessary to mount both tables to the base in order to ensure parallelism of the two tabletops. Lock them down as parallel as possible. This is what for example Rockwell did when they ground their jointers at the factory.
