Can you use a laser collimator on a SCT?
Table of Contents
A laser collimator, therefore, cannot be used in the same manner as with a Newtonian Reflector. However, by using a special two part process, it is possible to use a laser to collimate a (SCT). The first part of the process calibrates the laser collimator for your individual SCT.
Does SCT need collimation?
To get the best performance from your Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT) or EdgeHD telescope, its optics must be collimated—properly aligned within the telescope.

Does a Dobsonian need collimation?
A Dobsonian is a reflector telescope, it uses mirrors, a primary and a secondary, and these need to work together. They can get out of alignment through movement and with use. Hence, the reason for collimation.
How do you collimate a HyperStar?
The actual collimation of the HyperStar is very simple. Remove the camera and place the Hyperstar adapter. Start by unscrewing the centering disc from the HyperStar adapter and set the collimator in modes 2 or 3 (three lasers + crosshairs). Now you can see another cross on the target of the collimator.
How often should you collimate a telescope?
If you’re transporting it from one spot to another (like from the house to backyard) for a night of viewing, collimate every time. If the scope is left in a fixed position (such as in an observatory or similar), just do a quick check to see if anything has changed.

How often should a SCT telescope be collimated?
The second one needs it about every six months. I move around to several sites. My buddy’s C8 which is older than my first one has never had to collimate his. The point is, hopefully, if collimation is done properly, it won’t need it often.
How do I know if my telescope needs collimation?
You want to see a diffraction pattern of concentric circles appear around it. Basically, this refers to circles around the star that might look a little wiggly. If the circles you see are not concentric, then your telescope needs to be collimated.
How often should a Dobsonian collimate?
I colliminate for every observing session. Only takes me a minute or two to do so even with my grab and go 8 inch.
How much does collimation affect telescope performance?
Improper collimation can affect the telescope across its COMPLETE range, and on nights of average seeing can make the difference between seeing 20 stars in a super-faint NCG cluster or maybe 25 stars in that same object. No kidding.
What is the best way to check optical collimation?
Now the VERY BEST WAY to check optical collimation is with an artificial star. But in order to do this, you have to be pretty far away. The glint of a telephone pole ceramic insulator or the reflection off of a car bumper, either being a few hundred yards away, might work… But I don’t recommend this method.
When will the Celestron Cheshire collimation eyepiece be in stock?
This item is in stock and typically ships in 1 day or less. Optimally suited for precisely collimating Newtonian reflector telescopes, this Celestron 1.25″ Cheshire Collimation Eyepiece is capable of aligning Schmidt-Cassegrains as well. Fits 1.25″ focusers and diagonals.
How do you adjust the collimation?
If you only go with “Snug,” you collimation will change on you with normal handling and temperature changes. But when you tighten, use TINY movements. By this, I mean 1/30th of a turn or so, EQUALLY on each screw.
