How does a Coriolis meter work?
Table of Contents
Coriolis mass flow meters measure mass through inertia. A liquid or gas flows through a tube which is being vibrated by a small actuator. This artificially introduces a Coriolis acceleration into the flowing stream, which produces a measurable twisting force on the tube resulting in a phase shift.
How do you install a flow meter?
Installation tips for flowmeters:
- Ensure the flowmeter is full at all times – many flowmeter’s measure the fluid’s velocity and assume the whole section is full of liquid.
- Do not install a flowmeter directly upstream of a free pipe outlet in a vertical pipe.
- Do not install a flowmeter at the top of a piping system.

What can affect the maximum rating of a coriolis flow sensor?
Process connection type and environmental and process fluid temperatures may reduce the maximum rating. For common sensor and fitting combinations, see the Micro Motion ELITE Coriolis Flow and Density Meters Technical Data Sheet at www.emerson.com/flowmeasurement. All sensors comply with Council Directive 2014/68/EU on pressure equipment.
