Is Normacol a laxative or stool softener?
Normacol granules contain 62% w/w sterculia, which is a vegetable gum from the karaya tree. It is this natural dietary fibre which helps to relieve constipation and help keep you regular.
Can you take Normacol everyday?
As with all laxatives, Normacol Plus should not be taken every day for long periods. If you need laxatives every day, you should see your doctor. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.
What are the side effects of Normacol?
Like all medicines, Normacol can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them:
- Occasionally Normacol causes a swollen stomach.
- Some people may suffer from wind.
- The bowel may become blocked.
- The oesophagus (gullet) can become blocked if Normacol is not taken with enough fluid, or too much Normacol is taken.

It is not ideal to take it just before bedtime as you must take it with lots of fluid. We also recommend that you take it after your meal, not before. One sachet is equivalent to one 5ml teaspoon (large pots of Normacol are often dispensed, rather than sachets so may need to measure this out).

When treating constipation the medicine normally produces a laxative effect within 12 hours. The granules should be taken once or twice a day after meals. They should be placed dry on the tongue and swallowed immediately without chewing or crushing, with plenty of water or a cool drink.
