Why does the sky light up during earthquake?
Table of Contents
After the ionisation, the ions travel up through the cracks in the rocks. Once they reach the atmosphere these ions can ionise pockets of air, forming plasma that emits light.
What are the signs before an earthquake?
Warning signs that may indicate an earthquake is imminent can include:
- Erratic animal behaviours such as scared or confused pets or birdcalls not usually heard during the night.
- Sudden water level changes in wells or artesian bores.
Can you predict when an earthquake is going to happen?
No. Neither the USGS nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. We do not know how, and we do not expect to know how any time in the foreseeable future.
Can lightning cause an earthquake?
(Image credit: Tony Shinbrot.) Mysterious flashes of lightning sometimes herald earthquakes, and now scientists may have discovered why: Shifting grains surrounding faults in the Earth may generate an electric charge. This strange flickering, known as earthquake lights, can occur before or during quakes.

What is cloud iridescence?
Cloud iridescence, seen above the sun covered with grey clouds, Pondicherry, India Cloud iridescence over County Kildare, Ireland Cloud iridescence or irisation is a colorful optical phenomenon that occurs in a cloud and appears in the general proximity of the Sun or Moon. The colors resemble those seen in soap bubbles and oil on a water surface.
Do large ice crystals produce iridescence?
Larger ice crystals do not produce iridescence, but can cause halos, a different phenomenon. Irisation is caused by very uniform water droplets diffracting light (within 10 degrees from the Sun) and by first order interference effects (beyond about 10 degrees from the Sun). It can extend up to 40 degrees from the Sun.
Did you see these iridescent clouds in the Philippines?
Kino Obusan caught these iridescent clouds β one on the right and one on the left β on July 15, 2016, from Batangas, Philippines. βIt was my first time to see a rare cloud phenomenon like this.β Thank you, Kino!
Where does iridescence occur?
Iridescence occurs most in thin altocumulus or cirrocumulus, often at the beginning of their formation. It is the result of diffraction around droplets, just like in Coronae .
