How do you test if a magneto is working?
Table of Contents
Touch one probe tip to the engine block and the other to the metal clip inside the rubber casing which normally attaches to the spark plug. Readings are given in thousands of ohms, or “k” ohms. A good reading will range from 3 k to 15 k. A higher reading indicates a poor connection.
How does a magneto fail?
The high voltage will simply arc across the gap. The gap will widen as the wire ends melt further apart and soon the adjacent turns will be affected so the coil will eventually fail. Magneto coils are usually a long time dying.

How do I know if my magneto is bad?
Holding the plastic handle of the screwdriver, bring the metal area of the screwdriver close to a metal part of the engine, being careful not to touch it. Have someone start the mower. If you don’t see a spark between the screwdriver and the engine, the magneto is bad.
Does a magneto need to be grounded?
The thing that prevents a spark from being created inadvertently is a wire called a P-lead, which effectively grounds the magneto. But if the P-lead is not connected properly, the magnetos can create its electrical signal. So it is important to verify that the magnetos are properly grounded.
What is magneto drop check?
A basic magneto drop-off check based on engine speed is typically done during the before-takeoff check to determine the loss of engine speed that occurs when magnetos are switched from both magnetos to one (left or right) magneto. The maximum drop-off limit is in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH).

How do you diagnose a bad magneto?
How do you know if a magneto is bad?
Most “bad mag checks” are spark plug related. The spark plug is fouled and shorted to ground or is open and the magneto, which is functioning normally, is unable to fire it. A typical bad plug will cause an immediate drop of 250 or more RPM, at the mag check. The key indicator is the suddenness of the drop.
How do you tell if a flywheel magnets are getting bad?
Be sure the magnet you are testing is rotated away from the magneto when testing takes place. Hold the screwdriver against the magnet, if the magnet pulls the screwdriver in, the magnet is fine. If it seems weak or does not pull the screwdriver in, the magnet needs to be replaced.
Is the thorspark magneto ignition any good?
I like magnetos as well as electronic, and there are plenty of people who will prefer to use them, but the Thorspark magneto ignition is an economical and practical alternative. I have read various people on classic motorcycle forums writing how simple to get working properly and reliable magnetos are.
What to do if your ignition fault is a magneto?
If you have identified the magneto as the source of your ignition fault send it to us for repair. We will check all the parts of the magneto for faults and will provide a firm quotation for a repair along with a description of the magneto repair required.
What should I do if my ignition system is not working?
If you are having trouble with your ignition system we recommend that you first change your spark plugs and HT leads. Over time the HT leads can degrade and reduce the potential difference at the spark plug. On many Rolls Royce models there is a dual ignition system.
What happens when a magneto spark plug fails?
These faults do not necessarily occur instantaneously, they may develop over time leading to a gradual deterioration of the spark output. The voltage generated across magneto coils is quite high, in the order of 20,000 volt if no spark plugs are in place. The coils are, of course, designed for this pressure but no insulation is perfect.
